Sustainable Futures Day

Here is David Smith from Electrifying Bradfield helping children with the solar car challenge. Electrifying Bradfield has facilitated access to the solar car kits from Kite Magic. These kits are made from a range of re-purposed, specially 3D printed and sourced components. The components are designed in a way that requires participants to experiment in order to get an effective solar car, teaching both problem solving and aspects of renewable power.

If your school/organisation would like to run Solar Car days, please contact Electrifying Bradfield.

Electrifying Bradfield

Electrifying Bradfield is about doing what we can to support adoption of renewable energy within the Upper North Shore. We have a vision of a cleaner, cheaper energy future made possible by the electrification of our  houses and transport. This vision is heavily influenced by Saul Griffiths and 'Rewiring Australia'.

Support Us

Electrifying Bradfield works mainly using volunteer time. Contributing $50 goes a long way to helping us run solar information nights, attend markets and fairs and provide educational materials.

Note that Electrifying Bradfield is a not-for-profit, although not a certified charity (DGR).

Confronting Four Aussie Myths About Action Against Climate Change!

In reading and listening to much corporate and social media commentary and in conversations I have with people there seem to be four very common Aussie myths about  climate change and energy and actions we need to take!

All of these myths need to be challenged!

MYTH 1: ‘Coal exports are essential to our future economy’ – WRONG!

This is a question I am asked often when people talk to me about ‘climate change’

Simple answer –

WEATHER – is the day-to-day conditions of things like:

*sun [sunny, cloudy, partly cloudy, overcast] and temperature, [hot, warm, cold]

*precipitation [drizzle, showers, rain, dew, frost, rain, storms, hail, snow]

*wind - strength[gentle, light, strong, gale, tornado] & direction

Participants individually, in pairs - with adults - first built their solar model cars from materials provided - helped by wonderful students from Mackellar Girls' High School and Jacquie Cleary (Sustainability Education Officer, KRG Council and David Smith, President, Electrifying Bradfield. They then raced them on the corflute track - with lots of fun and excitement!

Similar workshops can be provided FREE in any school in Ku-ring-gai LGA.

*For the previous four months an 'ecological catastrophe' has been occurring along Adelaide's coastal beaches!

* Sharks, stingrays, fish, sea dragons, shellfish, cuttlefish, eels, razor clams are dying along South Australia's coastline: a great white shark on Henley Beach!

*The ecological disaster is caused by a massive algal bloom of Karenia mikimotoi. Algal blooms reduce the oxygen levels in the water which suffocates animals with gills.

*The recent unanimous ruling by the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has very significant implications for the governments and decision-makers in Australia and other countries that are emitting significant amounts of Greenhouse gases through the mining and burning of fossil fuels at home - AND are exporting fossil fuels to other countries to burn!

* Through July 2025, 19,592 solar batteries were installed in the 3 million Australian rooftops fitted with solar energy systems!

* This increases the total stored electricity battery capacity (not including that in the increasing number of EVs) by 344 MWhs (344,000 KWhs).

* From July 1st, 2025 households and businesses with rooftop solar systems installed or being installed can get around 30% (depending on size of battery installed) off the total cost of a battery.

This is the question addressed in a new book called Waste Wars: Dirty Deals, International Rivalries and the Scandalous Afterlife of Rubbish by Alexander Clapp (2025).

'The combined weight of everything made by humans now outweighs every living thing on Earth!' [ref: Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, 2020]

Plastics weigh more than twice the weight of all marine and terrestrial animals: buildings and roads outweigh all trees & shrubs!
